There is so much more we need to learn.

Did you know?

  • A bee colony has approximately 60,000 bees, only one can be the queen. The queen develops from a fertilized egg and is fed royal jelly continuously. She is the largest bee in the hive. Her job is to mate with several male bees (drones) from other hives and lay approximately 2,000 eggs daily, from about April through September.

  • Drones make up about 1 percent of the colony. These “Romeo” bees have one task…to mate with queen bees from other hives.

  • Drones develop from unfertilized eggs and have large eyes (the better to spot a queen!) and a blunted abdomen with no sting.

  • Bees keep the ambient temperature in the hive throughout the year at about 90 degrees Fahrenheit? In winter, they cluster and keep moving to stay warm; in the summer months they gather water and use their wings to fan the air to keep the colony cool. They also engage in something called “bearding”, gathering in a cluster at the entrance and fan cooler air into the hive.

  • Bees pollinate many of the foods we enjoy, including strawberries, apples, cucumbers, cherries, and almonds.

  • Bees can fly up to 15 mph and travel over 5 miles in search of nectar and pollen.

  • A single bee produces less than a teaspoon of honey during its life

  • Bees must visit about 2 million flowers to make 1 pound of honey

  • Honey has a near infinite shelf life
